On the weekend of April 5th-8th, a majority of the BigchainDB Consulting Services team participated in the Blockchaingers Hackathon 2018 in Groningen, the Netherlands. The team from BigchainDB did not directly participate in hacking solutions but rather in the capacity of jedis, or mentors, for the Machine to Machine Economy track of the hackathon.

As jedis, we primarily focused on mentoring the participating teams and answering their technical questions around the use of BigchainDB and the theoretical aspects of the Machine to Machine Economy track. We also helped with the code and solution reviews at the end of the hacks.

Apart from mentoring and reviews, we also took some time to talk to the teams, across all the tracks, using BigchainDB in their hacks. To say the least, we were pleased to see the unique array of approaches used by teams leveraging BigchainDB in their solutions.

The following teams used BigchainDB-based solutions in their hack. They describe the experience in their own words.

Kryha

Kryha is comprised of a group of young blockchain experts that help organizations understand the intricacies of this emerging tech. The Kryha team participated in the Machine to Machine Economy track of Blockchaingers. They created a solution in which they ran BigchainDB 2.0 on flying drones. Guess what? They were the winners in their track. Well done, guys!

“During the hackathon, we had the goal of using BigchainDB 2.0 Alpha for IoT and utilising this to deploy a swarm of drones in remote areas. In very close collaboration with the BigchainDB developers, we successfully deployed a network of 9 nodes running the full stack of BigchainDB, MongoDB and also Tendermint for consensus. This allowed us to create a fully distributed network of drones running full nodes.

On top of this stack we used the BigchainDB ORM package which allowed us to create objects in the BigchainDB Database which we could append updates to, this allowed us to query for a single map representing object instead of having to search a string of transactions. In order to have this fully run we build the first BigchainDB 2.0 Alpha ARM 64 Multi-node deployment script and tested it together with the BigChainDB developers.

Many thanks for the BigchainDB Team with helping us during the all 48 hours of the Hackathon.” — Kryha Team

Cyber Peace Keeping Forces

The Cyber Peace Keeping forces guys built a smart intelligence sharing system for incident reporting based on BigchainDB. They won the second prize in their respective track.

Our cyber incident reporting platform requires to be decentralised and transparent, with good access control. A decentralised way to store cyber incident reports, only accessible for trusted partners and transparent software. We worked closely together with BigchainDB’s amazingly helpful team — Kamal, Manolo and Gautam — to create the product we envisioned. — Cyber Peace Keeping Forces Team

Odd.bot

Odd.bot is working towards fair distribution of abundant prosperity. The odd.bot team participated in the Machine to Machine Economy track and built a system for robot interaction based on the BigchainDB blockchain. The awesome part — they also won the second prize in the track.

We used BigchainDB for the odd.bot team in our machine to machine economy simulation where robots manage their interactions with the (simulated) world. For example, they can communicate their intentions and handle parcel deliveries with other actors using BigchainDB. This creates a safe and secure environment for the robots to interact in their ecosystem. It also allows humans to interact with their ecosystem. — odd.bot Team

Chaintip

Chaintip is a real-time, audited crypto-exchange that shares revenue among token holders. The Chaintip team, based in the Netherlands, participated in the Public Safety & Security track and envisioned a BigchainDB based system for tracking government communications.

We are experimenting with BigchainDB as a back-end log to help the government to keep track of subpoenas sent to private companies. BigchainDB helps us in creating a fast working proof-of-concept version of tracking an asset in a blockchain. — Chaintip Team

And from the BigchainDB jedi team— we all enjoyed our time at the hackathon. We were excited to see so many teams use our product for such diverse and amazing use cases. The fact that several of the teams went on to win prizes really filled us with pride. We wish the teams all the very best for the next steps in their journeys.
